Magnificent English Ebonised Bracket/Table clock signed by the London maker LANGLEY BRADLEY. This is a double fusee bracket clock with original verge escapement. It has a monthly calendar and false pendulum on the face with cherub spandrals to each corner. This clock was made around 1705 and was originally built with quarter repearting but that feature has been removed; however its hour repeat has been retained. It has the original key winder with ivory key tag with makers name and date on it. Gold and brass work bears a striking similarity to fittings and decorations found on clocks by Thomas Tompion and are thought to be from the same source. The shell-like half hour figures between the Roman Numerals on the chapter ring are quite unusual and may lead one to think the clock was made for someone connected with the sea. A slight difference in the color of gold may indicate that the right handle post and left front finial are replacements. The backplate of the clock is beautifully engraved and is also signed by LANGLEY BRADLEY. LANGLEY BRADLEY was apprenticed to Joseph Wise in 1687 and admitted to the freedom of the Clockmakers' Company in 1694. He was considered such an important early clock maker that he was invited to build the clock for Saint Paul's Cathedral which served as standard London Timekeeper from 1708 until Westminister took favor in 1892, See page 247, OLD CLOCKS AND WATCHES & THEIR MAKERS by F.J.BRITTEN in a revision of the 3rd Edition published by the Antique Collectors' Club. See also two articles in "CLOCKS" magazine for February and March 1979. Bradley helped Dr. Derham in the preparation of the 1st Edition of the ARTIFICIAL CLOCKMAKER published in 1696 which was one of the earliest books about clocks. The WEATHERFIELD COLLECTION OF CLOCKS contains a fine long case clock by LANGLEY BRADLEY. There is also a LANGLEY BRADLEY clock in the GUILDHALL. Langley Bradley also made a fine longcase clock for The Admiralty Offices. This is an exceptionally fine English Bracket Clock by a famous London maker and would be a great addition to any fine collection.
