These are very old, probably victorian original mantel ornaments or fender fireplace ornaments. They are heavy old cast iron, very old foundry work, and measure 9 and a half inches long by 7 inches high and weigh 7 pounds the pair. Each one is marked on the back with an old series of letters and numbers which I can't make out but these come from around 1880 to 1920 at the latest and I think right around 1900, victorian era in style and design. They are saint bernard dogs, rescue dogs, the ones with the keg or barrel of whiskey on the collar. They stand proudly and can serve as twin doorstops, which they may have been, or bookends, which they are little old to be. These were painted some fifty years or so again, old enamel leaded paint which is wearing but still very nice. This is a very rare pair of antique guaranteed old metal dog statues, very collectible on many levels. Thanks for looking and please see my other auctions for more antique and vintage cast metal bookends and doorstops that I will combine on shipping whenever possible.
