This auction is for a very old Bering Sea Eskimo carved ivory net needle found and legally collected in Shishmaref, AK in the early 1930's. These were used by eskimo's to make nets. It measures just over 7 3/4 inches long by just under 3/4 inches wide by just under 1 millimeter thick and it's solid. This artifact was made in Alaska by a Native Alaskan and was legally obtained and owned by the collector. It's beautiful and has a nice old patina. This comes from a large collection of Native American Art and Artifacts of a deceased collector who began collecting early in his childhood. As an adult he became a teacher and used his summers off to pursue his collecting. He lived and taught school in Alaska for many years before retiring home. He passed away in 2002.
