In this auction we offer a VERY OLD 5 1/2"(overall length) FIXED BLADE HUNTING/SKINNING KNIFE with HAND DECORATED HANDLE OF STACKED LACQUERED BIRCH BARK RINGS and HAND DECORATED LEATHER SHEATH. This knife was made in "KAUHAVA", the knife making capitol of Finland. The BLADE is 2 3/4" LONG, is tight on the ferrule, and, ENGRAVED with "KAUHAVA" on the blade, and, "1910" and, what appears to be "RAMLMAALMAA" in the groove. This knife is in Excellent Condition with no gouges out of the knife blade and no rusting to be found - it appears to have NEVER BEEN SHARPENEDened and, under magnification, a couple tiny nicks can be seen. The handle is made out of GENUINE STACKED BIRCH BARK RINGS with a CROWN AND SHIELD(coatof arms?) HAND PAINTED on it(t is some wear to the red paint). The ferrule and butt appear to be made out of a compound of nickel-silver? or tin/lead?, or, tin/lead/aluminum?, or, some combination? T is a design engraved in the metal of the ferrule. We understand that the blades of PUUKKO knives were either made out of carbon steel or stainless steel? We are guessing Stainless since t is no rusting(only a couple small age discoloration marks). The Sheath is in EXCELLENT CONDITION made out of REAL LEATHER(likely DEER) and has been HAND ENGRAVED(HOT IRON BRANDED?) with a DEER'S HEAD and fancy scroll work. This knife was given to me as a gift at a young age - I will show my age by stating that this knife is AT LEAST 65 YEARS OLD and counting(thankfully). We consulted with EXPERTS "KELLAM KNIVES"(our thanks to them) and, they have stated that it is of PRE-WWII VINTAGE(that makes it 70+ years old). However, from the engraving in the groove, it is probable that this dates from 1910 or earlier, unless "1910" isthe birth year of the owner/engraver? Please understand that I don't know what I am talking about when it comes to knives - most of the description above has been gleaned from the writing on various websites.
