I have collected Political memorabilia for almost 20 years- and I have never seen this item elsew A copy, in wraps, of the " Presidential Election, 1864- Proceedings of the National Union Convention, held in Baltimore, Md. June 7 th and 8 th , 1864 reported by D.F. Murphy, of the Official Corps of Reporters for the U.S. Senate. Published in New York by Baker and Goodwin, Printers, Printing House Square- opposite City Hall- 1864." This is a complete proceedings pamphlet from the convention that re-nominated Abraham Lincoln for President and nominated Andrew Johnson for Vice-President. The National Union Party was a political party in the United States from 1864 to 1868 . It was an alliance between members of the Republican Party who backed Abraham Lincoln and some Northern Democrats (plus a few anti-Confederate Southerners such as Andrew Johnson ) during and after the Civil War .The National Union Party was created in the Spring of 1864 during dark days of the Civil War, at least in Union eyes. Anti-Lincoln "Radical" Republicans held the belief that the "incompetent" Lincoln could not be re-elected, and began convening in Cleveland starting on May 31, 1864, and eventually nominated John C. Frémont , who was also the Republicans' first presidential standard-bearer from 1856 .Former Republicans and Democrats joined together forming a new political party in convention at Baltimore, Maryland during the first week in June 1864 Presidential Election in order to accommodate the War Democrats who wished to separate themselves from the Copperheads . This is the main reason why War Democrat Andrew Johnson was selected to be the Vice Presidential nominee. The National Unionists supporting the Lincoln-Johnson ticket also hoped that the new party would stress the national character of the war.The pamphlet is 94 pages in length and contains all of the daily proceedings of the convention, listings of delegates and alternates, various committees and rules of order, the roll call votes for each resolution and the vote totals for nomination. Incidentally, Lincoln did not receive a unanimous vote- he received 484 votes, U.S. Grant received 22 votes. Only after the votes were tallied did Missouri change her 22 votes from Grant to Lincoln. It's very likely that this pamphlet belonged to one of the delegates, as t are minor pencil notations (such as those seen on the voting list for President) scattered and t The pamphlet is in fair to good condition, with browning of the cover and some minor foxing throughout. The front cover has some chipping around the edges, most noticeably at the bottom. I am a member of the UACC and The Manuscript Society, and I guarantee the authenticity of this item.
