This is another nice item being offered, it is a Civil War era Pocket Telescope, the type usually carried by officers. It is 3-draw and made of brass, measuring 3 1/4" long in the closed position, 9 3/4" in the open position and has a diameter of 1 1/4". T are no visible markings, which was common for the Civil War era. Most optical instruments during the Civil War were made in France or Germany , they had the technology w the U.S. was still lacking. It wasn't designed for very long distances, but would give a good idea of the surrounding area. The small size also made it very convenient to carry in a pocket or haversack. It is complete and the optics appear fine and the brass has a beautiful aged patina. T are similar examples in The Civil War Collectors Encyclopedia , by Francis Lord and an excavated example in Civil War Artifacts - A Guide for the Historian , by Howard Crouch (see pictures). It would really go well with a display of an officers or soldiers personal effects. I am listing it with a very fair reserve, so take advantage to add it to your Civil War collection. Please feel free to ask any questions and take a look at my other Civil War items in my Ebay Store and on auction.....thanks for looking.
