Thanks for viewing my auction! My family has a John C. Fox Square Grand Piano that you see pictured. This piano was passed on to my mom last year and while the piano means so much to our family who has had it for decades, my mom is willing to part with it as she's had to do with many things from the estate. Auction records show Weber pianos have sold for $22k-$30k and this piano dates before the Weber pianos. The piano is numbered. It is confirmed #3776. The piano will come with the stool you see pictured. As you can see, the legs are a beautiful ornate Queen Anne style. The color is a mahogany. The inside of the piano is just amazing to look at. It completely closes up to be a wooden box on legs (see picture 8.) Please email me any questions you may have or if you have info. on this piano that I may not even be aware of. I have bought and sold on ebay for many years and I am a trust-worthy seller. I will do my best to answer any questions or put you in contact with someone who can answer them for you. I have set up buyer restrictions in hopes of only having serious buyers. If the restrictions are a problem, please write me. Delivery may be an option. Please write me before buying about that option. Thanks so much for your time and the many interests in this amazing piece of history! As per the Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online- FOX , JOHN C ., piano manufa cturer; b. in 1832 in New York C ity; he apparently married; d. 14 Jan. 1868 at Kingston, Ont.John C . Fox trained both as a musi cian and as a manufa cturer of pianos in the United States and in Europe. He set up a firm in New York C ity to make pianos, J. C . Fox and C ompany, and he arrived in Kingston, C anada West, in February 1861 to sell pianos made by this firm. By June he had a bran ch store in Kingston and within a year had started a piano fa ctory. He was a resident of Kingston by 1862, when he appears to have dis continued the New York C ity firm. In September 1862, he c ompeted in the provin cial exhibition in Toronto and won first prize for the best piano. He supplied pianos for visiting musi cians and, a skilled musi cian himself, performed at lo cal c on certs and dire cted c harity musi cals. Fox expanded his business in January 1864, buying a large distin ctive stone building while retaining the earlier fa ctory as a bran ch of the new one. He also improved the quality of the instruments he produ ced: on 23 Sept. 1865 he re ceived a patent for a modified sounding board. He âeoebound the free border of the piano sounding board with a c ast iron band and thus made it free of any tenden cy to spring upwards or downwards.âe He later advertised âeoeDouble Iron C lad Pianos for Defian ce,âe explaining that they defied c ompetition in both pri ce and beauty of tone. Fox had by then the largest piano fa ctory in C anada. He employed over 60 men, many of them skilled artisans, and c ompleted six pianos a week. He had sales agents in Pi cton, C obourg, Toronto, Hamilton, and London. However, over-expansion, along with a fire at his bran ch fa ctory in May 1867 and the c ollapse of the C ommer cial Bank in O ctober, brought finan cial failure. On 16 De c. 1867 Fox was de clared insolvent. Early that month he had re ceived head injuries in a sleighing a cc ident, and he died in January 1868. Among his effe cts were a fine organ and a C remona violin. He was buried in New York C ity. Fox âe(tm)s patent for the sounding board was sold to F. C . C line who c arried on the business for a time. All the materials and tools later went to C harles Rappe, later Rappe, Weber, and C ompany, who manufa ctured pianos for many years in J. C .
