Rare historic (Dutch) faience charger end 18th C. Understanding the picture of this charger one needs to know a bit of the history of Holland. At the end of the 18th century the emperor Napoleon conquered the -at that time- republic of the Netherlands and appointed his brother, Louis Napoleon, as king. Very understandable, a lot of the Dutch people wanted to be independent! T was quite some "resistance' in favor of Prince William V, who was from March 1766 ditary stadholder (viceroy) of the "Republic of the Seven United Dutch Provinces". When in January 1796 the French army occupied Holland, the prince and his wife fled to England. All kind of portrait-plates, in faience, with the images of the Prince and/or of his wife has been made during his exile. This charger is very typical and exceptional, as the illustration is symbolic. The lion between the pillars is the symbol of Holland (still is!) and the human head is symbolic for Prince William. Prince William is an ancestor of the present Royal Family. The charger is 30.6cm (12") wide and 6cm (2.4") high. Unfortunately, the charger has a large (sealed) hairline. The hairline is not very visible on the front side of the charger. The rim of the charger has the inevitable chips. In spite of the mentioned defects, the charger makes a good impression! On the back is the mark of "De Porceleyne Cleauw" (The Porcelain Claw) The border of the charger is divided in panels (after the Kraak style), alternating a figure, a flower (tulip) and a symbol. In the center are two pillars forming an arch with on both sides a tree (probably Orange tree, also royalty symbols in Holland). Between the pillars is situated the lion with the human face, depicting Prince William V. Shipping costs are: USA $40; EEC $23.
