This is another nice item being offered, it is a letter from a Civil War soldier written July 5, 1863 after the Battle of Gettysburg. It was written by Private Zephram Larvier of the 151 st New York Infantry, from South Mountain , Maryland . It was sent to his wife Priscilla and he tells her that they marched from Harpers Ferry in heavy rain and mud. They marched to Frederick City Maryland and to Monocacy. He says that when they left this area, they turned their knapsacks into the Quartermaster to be able to march in light order. They would march another 18 miles before camping on the old battleground of South Mountain . In the morning they would march to Boonsboro, w they felt âeoeâe¦the rebs will try to get outâe. He includes some small talk about family and friends and again âeoeâe¦. I am trying to stop the rebs from going back into Vaâe. The 151 st New York made this critical march in pursuit of the retreating Confederates from the Gettysburg Battlefield. Larvierâe(tm)s regiment played a pivotal role in the pursuit of General Leeâe(tm)s retreat, an offensive tactic which resulted in a crucial momentum shift for the Union . This 5âe x 8âe letter runs 4 pages and is written in dark black ink. T are some dark unknown stains, but the writing remains legible and is quite easy to read. T are only slight separations in the folds. Twenty eight year old Private Larvier would die just three months after writing this letter, from Typhoid Fever. No doubt that these difficult marches in the mud and rain contributed to his illness. Overall this letter is in good condition and is an excellent example of the Union battle plans of the Gettysburg Campaign. I am listing this historic piece with a very fair reserve, so take advantage to add it to your Civil War collection. I will also include what records I have on Larvier and the 151 st New York . Please feel free to ask any questions and take a look at my other Civil War items in my Ebay Store and on auctionâe¦..thanks for looking.
