Up for auction is this very aesthetic Galena specimen from the Picher Field, Ottawa County, Oklahoma. The specimen measures 3 1/2 x 1 3/4 x 3/4 inches and features over 20 very unusual galena crystals on a flake of tannish chert. The Picher Field is the name given to the group of mines around Picher, Oklahoma. The vast majority of the specimens from the Tri-State district (the confluence of KS, MO and OK) were not attributed to individual mines but were mostly labeled as having come from Joplin, Missouri. This habit is seen in other minerals, notably in graphite and mica minerals, but I've personally never seen it in galena. The cuboctahedral galena crystals appear to be rounded and I found them to be curiously structured and examined them under a loupe. At first I thought they might be etched, but the crystals are clearly llamelar in nature--VERY ODD. One of the other things that I really like about this piece is that the chert matrix looks like an artifact....very read more
