VERY UNUSUAL & UNIQUE ANTIQUE CHECKERBOARD TABLETOP

Up for bid is as the title states, a very unusual and very unique checkerboard tabletop. Believed to have been created between 1850 and 1865, this extraordinary checkerboard, made of wood about 18-1/4" by 18-1/2", and cloth with an interesting glass beaded top. While the red squares are of needlepoint quality thread, the white are all together different, in that they were sewn with three color variations of white or light color beads. The outer ring or frame of each lighter square contains a couple rows of white beads, followed by a couple rows of a dirtier or grayer beads, then by a clearer glass bead, almost see-through. And while no lighter square is totally intact, or finished to it's center with beads, from a distance one can see the ultimate effect. Some of the lighter squares are almost non-existent due to wear and age. The cloth/beaded top is sort of framed atop of a pine foundation board, surrounded with possibly a walnut framing wood, possibly the top to a parlor table, which may have sat in, at one time, a very nice parlor room of a very high society home. The bottom portion of table, unfortunately is at present, not included and all that remains is a primitive portion of an iron substitute, which allowed the tabletop to be raised up off the floor. The iron piece in question, standing around 7-8" in height and about 2-3" in diameter appears to be an inverted portion of a buncher(?) or some type of kitchen appliance from the 19th century. The iron piece is attached with old roofing nails. The original bottom of the tabletop, does have an existing hole, just below this iron piece, which I'm sure is how the original stem or pedestal of the table base was connected. Remove the newest member(the iron piece)of this ensemble and you'll have a beautiful primitive gameboard to hang anyw in the home. Keep the iron piece and add to it in order to have a really nice primitive gameboard, ready to use again. Shipping for this unique item will be $20.00 due to size, weight and packing to get it to your destination safely. Good luck and check out my other auctions.
