Very Unusual Vintage Set of West German Butter Dishes I have up for bid a very nice set of West German kitchen dishes. In 1945 Germany was occupied in zones by the US, France, Britain, & the Soviet. In 1949 the three western zones became West Germany. I think the small one was used as a butter dish but I am not sure the use of the larger one. I purchased these at an estate sale in Staunton, Virginia and kept them for myself for years. The large dish is 6 1/2" in diameter and 2 3/4" high, not including the egg handle. It does have a chip on the bottom, and two on rim that are covered by the lid. None of the chips show when on display. It does have some crazing from age. It does not have any cracks. It is marked on the bottom Made in West Virginia and a symbol that says Old Castle within it. It also has the numbers 237 2 on the bottom. The lid is very colorful and detailed with chickens and ducks. The small dish, which I believe to be a butter dish is 3" high, not including the calf handle, and is 4" in diameter. The calf does have a chip on the ear and the other ear has what appears to be a mold flaw because it is glazed over. T is a chip on the base that is covered by the lid. T are no cracks but t is crazing from age. It has the same markings on the bottom except the numbers...they are 179 3. I hope I have taken pictures that will show their uniqueness and flaws. They are unusual pieces and look great displayed. Thank you. If anyone has any more information on these pieces, I would appreciate your email.
