Union Plane Company has an interesting history. The original company had one of the Stanley family as one of the owners. They were located in the same town as Stanley. They sold planes almost identical to Stanley and used the same numbering system for years. It was only after they introduced their famous "X" planes that Stanley finally bought them out. They continued selling the remaining stock as well as a later version.
The early Union planes have a few subtle differences. The extension under the rear handle is even with the bed unlike Stanley #2 planes. The wood is mahogany and the tote has a long horn. The knob is smaller and has a bead at the base. The real knock off is the lateral lever. It's different and has the pat applied for on it , as shown. It also has the "UNION" and " No 2" behind the frog. This plane is in very nice condition. The metal is not cracked, chipped or broken and retains about 80-90% of the japanning. The wood is very good. The tote has only the smallest of chips to the tip. The knob has a few stress cracks at the base. They both have the usual "tool box dings". This is a very uncommon early # 2 size plane. They are not usually found and certainly not in this condition. I have an original copy of John Walter's "Stanley" book, first edition listed. These books are very informative and getting harder to find, particularly in very good condition. Please look at it if you might want one. The plane would benefit from a good gentle cleaning but this is not a commonly found plane in much better than usual condition without the usual problems. I have several other collectable planes listed and I will always combine shipping to save a few bucks. Please ask questions early enough for me to answer them. I will certainly do my best to answer them. I am always willing to combine shipments to save money. Please let me know you will be bidding on more than one item. Thanks. I have shipped to New Zealand before and will certainly be able to do that again. I just can't include that in the shipping options. Shipping outside the USA will be more and depend on destination and weight. Insurance prices shown are for USA addresses. PLEASE READ THE SHIPING INFO FOR PAYMENT AND SHIPPING OUTSIDE THE USA. . Thanks for looking and good luck, Steve
