for your consideration is a very hard to find mug from the Pine Ridge Sioux Indian Reservation in western South Dakota. The Native American indians of the Pine Ridge reservation began making pottery in the mid to late 30's as a means of self help and economic development of the tribe. They were inspired, and helped, by Margaret Cable who was the director of the pottery school at North Dakota School of Mines. Two of the more skilled artists were Bernice Talbot and Olive Cottier. Bernice Talbot is the maker and designer of this mug. Her skilled carving techniques are responsible for the geometric design found at the bottom of the cup. Local red clay was used which enhanced the glaze colors seen on many of the Pine Ridge pieces. This cup is signed with the hand inscribed Pine Ridge Sioux logo on the bottom along with Talbot's signature. The cup is 3 1/2" tall and is in perfect, MINT!, condition. T are no chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. This is the first mug, or cup, that I have seen listed on e-Bay so they must be hard to find. Don't let this one get away. Also listed this week is another Pine Ridge piece, a small vase signed by Olive Cottier. Both of these items are in gorgeous, MINT!, condition and are excellent examples of the Pine Ridge Sioux production pieces. Please e-mail me with any questions or requests prior to bidding
