Offered is an excellent example of the rare and desirable first edition in English of Victor Hugo’s classic ‘The Hunchback of Notre-Dame,” one of the greatest of novels, printed at London in octavo by Richard Bentley in 1833, adorned with a fine engraved title depicting Esmeralda and a frontispiece depicting Quasimodo overlooking the balustrade, complete in all respects and bound in the publisher’s early 19th century black morocco gilt over marbled boards. This work was first published as volume 32 of Bentley’s ‘Standard Novels’ series, as the spine on the present volume indicates. This is also the first illustrated edition of ‘The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.’ �THE FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH AND THE FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION OF ‘THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE-DAME’ BY VICTOR HUGO, ONE OF THE GREATEST NOVELS OF WESTERN LITERATURE, PRINTED AT LONDON IN OCTAVO IN 1833 BY RICHARD BENTLEY AND ADORNED WITH A FINE ENGRAVED FRONTISPIECE AND ENGRAVED TITLE. �The full engraved title reads as follows: �“The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. / By Victor Hugo. / Translated by Frederick Shoberl. / … London: / Richard Bentley, / (Successor to B. Colburn.) / Cumming, Dublin. – Bell & Bradfute, Edinburgh. / Galignani, Paris. / 1833.” �The letterpress title adds: �“Translated Expressly for this Edition; With a Sketch of the Life and Writings of the Author By Frederic Shoberl.” �There is also a series title that identifies the present volume as number 32 in Bentley’s ‘Standard Novels’ series. �The volume is complete in all respects and comprises 466 numbered pages, plus the frontispiece, engraved title, series and letterpress titles, contents leaf and the ‘Life and Writings of Victor Hugo’ (14 pages in of preliminaries in total, plus the frontispiece and the engraved title). The volume measures 16.9 cm by 10.7 cm by 3.3 cm; each leaf measures about 163 mm by about 102 mm. �The half-morocco binding is in excellent condition, with strong hinges, a strong book-block and only very minor wear at the edges and corners, as well as very minor scuffing of the boards. Internally, the volume is also in excellent condition, with clean pages, clear print and ample margins throughout. The frontispiece and the engraved title are excellent impressions. The frontispiece, engraved title and letterpress title are somewhat toned, while the edges of the leaves in general show very minor toning (entirely unobtrusive and almost unnoticeable). �In all, this is an excellent example of the rare and desirable first edition in English of Victor Hugo’s classic ‘The Hunchback of Notre-Dame,” one of the greatest of novels in Western literature, printed at London in octavo by Richard Bentley in 1833, adorned with a fine engraved title depicting Esmeralda and a frontispiece depicting Quasimodo overlooking the balustrade, complete in all respects, bound in the publisher’s early 19th century black morocco gilt over marbled boards, first published as volume 32 of Bentley’s ‘Standard Novels’ series, and offered at a reasonable reserve. �Please take the time necessary to review the photos below in order to gain a better understanding of the content and condition of the volumes.
