This is a no reserve auction for an extremely rare Victor Type Z, external horn phonograph. This unit is one of the earliest Victors produced. The manufacture date was between 1903 and 1905. This Victor was probably made at least two years before the Victrola (internal horn) model was introduced (around 1906). The horn neck attaches directly to the soundbox housing. The entire horn assembly moves along with the needle. This is the first Victor Type Z unit I have run across in ANY condition. I believe this Victor would qualify to be considered museum quality. I played this unit almost daily until roughly a week ago when I (like the village idiot) overwound the crank. I broke (or sprung) a spring. The handle turns the gears fine but no tension is applied to the springs. I was quoted $175 to repair/rebuild the motor & springs and $50 to rebuild the reproducer (which is fine except for some minor flaking). So, about $175 will get it playing again. I have the contact information to the company that quoted me this price and will gladly pass it along to the buyer. However, t was abouta 60 day lead time in the repair. So, I bought a Victor Victrola VV1-70 (1927) and play this one daily now. Besides the mechanical issue mentioned above the only other visible damage/defect is: 1. 4" crack on the right front corner of the unit (in photo) this crack seems stable (the wood doesn't move when pressure is applied). The crack does not run all the way through the beveled edge. It is only visible from the top and not the bottom. 2. T is a 1/8" diameter hole on the outside of the horn which I am not sure was original or one of the owners added it over the years (in photo) 3. Some minor rust on some of the exposed metal pieces which one would expect after 104 years. The PROS: The turntable is straight and level. The felt is in good shape. The unit is complete. The crank is in good shape. The oak is in great shape except for the crack mentioned above. The brake works fine. The sound was very good. The serial # is: 43,769. I will ship this unit professionally packed anyw in the lower 48 for $120 (insurance included). I will pick up any charges above the $120. This will ship UPS Ground unless buyer picks-up unit.
