This tabletop Victrola dates to the mid 1920's and represented cutting edge technology for those people who loved the sound of their phonographs. Let me give you a little history. In the early 1900's through the teens, phonographs were all the rage of the era. They were a social equalizer allowing a farmer in a cornfield in Iowa to now hear some of the great opera stars sing, if that was his choice...no more need to be excluded from the famous urban opera houses of the day. Also, people could now hear the actual voice of their president and some of the candidates instead of merely reading the printed word in their newspaper. However, by the early 1920's the economy was in a slump and the glut of phonograph manufacturers that had swelled during the late teens due to a collapse of the patent tradmarks of the majors, had now fallen into decline. In fact, it was now only the majors that were selling phonographs in large quantities, but even then, the interest in new phonographs was low due to struggles in the economy and households already owning the technology of the phonograph. The only phonographs that were selling in hot quantities were the portable phonographs that could be placed in a Model T Ford or any of the other period autos and carried to a remote place for a picnic.
