Wonderful late Victorian novelty brooch featuring the tools of the gold prospector's trade. A pickaxe and shovel are crossed, forming the background for a gold pan filled with tiny gold nuggets. Gold prospectors usually retained a portion of their gold in nugget form rather than trading it in for currency (thus accumulating wealth without paying the exchange fee). Often they would use these nuggets to commission pieces of custom jewelry like this pin. The back has the original early safety catch of the sort used around 1890-1910. Tested and guaranteed 14K gold.
Origin: America, circa 1900. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 2" x 7/8". Weight: 3.0 grams.
