VICTORIAN 1880 Album RARE PAPER PRICKING Samples Description
WONDERFUL c1880 VICTORIAN ALBUM COMPLETELY FILLED WITH 31 MOUNTED PAPER PRICKING SAMPLES. Paper pricking is a traditional papercraft actually begun in the fifteenth-century. Examples of the art became more abundant in Regency pattern books and correspondence, but the heyday appears to have been 1840 - 1860. Women (typically) would make tiny holes with a fine needle on parchment type paper to produce beautiful lace-like designs. It was most common in the New England area of the United States. DESCRIPTION/CONDITION of ALBUM: 8 1/4" x 6 1/2". Original embossed cloth binding with "PRICKING" in gilded letters on front board. Unpaginated. Wear to hinges. Interior has accordion-fold heavy stock pages, each with a laid-in paper project. The interior is age-toned as are the samples, but all are complete. This is the most magnificent piece of American folk art that we've ever encountered - the plates are beautifully executed and incredibly detailed, representing hundreds of hours of fine handwork. They range from geometric patterns to botanicals, calligraphied messages, a church architectural, several Victorian fans, a columned facade, wild animals in the jungle, quilt patterns, etc. Each page is suitable for framing.
