Exquisite in design and detail, these Edwardian/Art Nouveau gold and amethyst earrings have remained in perfect condition for over a century. A product of the former Austrian Hungarian Empire, they were finely hand tooled in or near Vienna in the late 1880's. The hallmarks on the wire loops run like a tally of the goldsmith, the place, the LOTH system of markings and the date...as translated from the gold hallmark key. The number "585" is legible, denoting 15-18 K Gold. The gold, being at least 15K and the bluish hue of this particular amethyst is one of the rarest found in such antique pieces today. Because of its pale lavendar to dark greyish purple, it was one of the most sought after gems of the period and one of Queen Victoria's favourite gemstones. The rare gemstones are a tad over 2 carets each and set in a fine, octagonal channel setting with intricate bead-worked borders. Stepped down from this setting is a sash and floral border in white gold and pink gold ~ ~ both of 525 and 585. The delicate hand-tooled detail is outstanding and so very unique to the period! From top of the fine gold loop to bottom of the satin finished border, the measure is 7/8". Width across widest area is a tad over 5/8" and depth of earring is 1/4". Settings are open-backed, allowing the light to admit itself in such a manner as to bring forth the most unique refractions of light. Loop is a fine French loop with its triple hallmarked secure hinged backed closure. An absolute perfect set of earrings which must have rarely been used and tucked away as a keepsake.
