You are viewing an exquisite black forest carving. This little gem is an ornately carved mahogany ashtray. This Victorian treasure dates back to the 1870's. This vintage Swiss treen sports a magnificent high relief border that depicts stylized acorns, branches, and leaves . . . stunning. The foliage frames a center cavity that is done in the shape of marvelously irregular heart. The heart is an additional piece of lumber that is inlaid into the center ring of the piece. The overall sculpture has a wonderful perceived sense of motion sporting a deeply textured terrain of nooks and crannies accentuated by lightly incised carved lines. The color is a decadent semi sweet chocolate with a scant undertone of cherry tobacco . . . superb. This Switzerland woodenware prize is a fine example of Brienz School work. If you can think outside of the box, you will discover a variety of great uses for this cigarette tray: a pin dish, an inkwell or stamp box for the desk top, a dresser valet for small jewelry, a candle holder for a votive, a coin caddy, a vase for a beaded flower arrangement, and more. For the DIY people, you can install a small mirror on the heart, pop a hardware hook on the back, and wah-la you have yourself a wall sconce! You don't even need to fill it with contents to be an effective decoration. Even empty, it has a dynamic presence that stands on its own merit. This decorative arts figural carving displays beautifully in period interior decorating schemes: medieval, Eastlake, rococo, renaissance revival, tramp art, arts and crafts, aesthetic, mission, primitive, retro atomic ranch, cabin or lodge, shabby chic, and more. Wver this wooden artwork ends up, one thing is certain: it will bring old world charm and sophisticated elegance to any space it occupies. This 19 th century collectible measures 7 ½" long (19.1cm), 5" wide (12.7cm), and 1 ½" deep (3.8cm). CONDITION IS EXCELLENT: No chips, cracks, splits, breaks, or repairs. The patina is silky and first rate. If everything in your life reflects elegance and good taste, and you care passionately about details, this jewel belongs to you. Truly a striking and impressive survivor with a visual heft that warrants showing off. Promises to compliment any fine collection or décor. Thanks for looking and much fun and success with bidding.
