Superb Antique Victorian Mourning Locket/Pendant with Sentimental Red Hair Lock and Old Sepia Photo c.1890 A lovely rose gold plated Memorial/Mourning locket with 2 original convex glazed rock crystal covers which currently house a sentimental red hair lock on one side and a wonderfu old sepia photo (likely an ambrotype) of a lovely turn-of-the-century lady wearing a wide brimmed hat and high collar. The photo and hair could be removed to insert your own baby's hair, dried flowers or personal mementos. Mourning lockets and brooches of this type were during the Victorian and Civil War eras. From my own collection, this locket is in unusually nice condition. The piece has a wide bale and looks lovely attached to a velvet cord or chain. Measures 1" in diameter and 1.50" long with bale. "In the largely forgotten craft of hairwork, practiced widely in nineteenth-century America and Victorian England, the hair of loved ones--living and deceased--was woven into jewelry, wall decorations, and keepsakes. Rings, bracelets, lockets, and brooches were set with metalwork or ivory and painted with rich patterns. Pocket watches hung from long, woven hair fobs.
