Victorian Brassbound Walnut Lap Desk This is a very neat desk that is in very good condition. The contrast in colour between the walnut and the brass, make it an item that is sure to attract attention. It is not a big desk, as it measures approximately 12 x 9 x 6 (all measurements are in inches), but all the brass is intact and, apart from those knocks that an item of this age could be expected to suffer, the veneer is good with a nice colour and grain. Brass has also been used to create the matching escutcheon and cartouche. Both the lock and key look to be original and are in good working order. Opening the desk, more original features come into view. The leather, with its gold tooling, looks as though it has been place since the desk was made and, as a consequence, is showing signs of cracking across the fold. Both of the compartments are sound without any signs of the splitting so common in this type of piece. The pencil rest is fixed in position and the brass screw topped inkwell is probably a replacement. The spring to release the secret drawers is very strong and the two drawers are in good condition. All in all, this is a nice desk in good all round condition without any changes or repairs made since it left the craftsmanâe(tm)s workshop. Postage and packing will be $25 to UK and $69 to US.
