Victorian burr walnut writing slope with hidden (secret) draws This is a delightfully figured 19th century burr walnut writing slope with hidden (secret) draws. Closed the writing slope measures 13½ inches by 9½ inches by 8 inches. When open it measures 19½ inches by 13¾ inches by 4 inches maximum. The carcase is solid mahogany and the exterior is veneered with a superbly patenated burr walnut. It has brass edging and stringing together with a inlayed brass cartouche and matching key escutcheon. The cartouche is inscribed 'C.M.Law 1885'. The slope opens to reveal a blue tooled leather writing surface (skiver) together with compartments for ink bottles and pens. The two ink bottles with brass screw tops shown in the photograph are included (though of the correct pattern they may not be contemporary with the slope). The underside has a green baise covering. Both halves of the writing surface lift to reveal storage space. In the larger space there is what appears to be a plane panel below the ink and pen compartments. By lifting the division beside the right hand ink well the panel is released to reveal three hidden draws. This delightful piece of Victorian history is in excellent condition with superb patination of age. It is complete with its original fully functional lock and key.
