This mid-victorian lacquered box isincredible with its rich layered gold accent and classical themes. These boxes were made for the English market offering a bewitching vision of the east that captivated the hearts and minds of Europe thoughtout the ages. This papermaiche box is made by the first method of making boxes: by using sheets of papier miache as wood and working them as as for cabinetmaking. The decoration is of a subtley painted chinoiserie scene with figures; Japanese Lacquer. Japan by the way wasn't opened up to the western market until 1854 when a treaty of peace was signed. This type of box became popular in the remaining decades of the 19 th century peaking in mid Victorian times.Size: 7-1/2"w X 2-1/2"h x 7-1/2"d
