Offering this beautiful ornate victorian ladies' dance card holder or as they are known in Europe a ballspender. These have been used for hundreds of years by ladies going to grand balls. They served two purposes, to be used at the ball to record the her dances and as a keepsake of the occasion. Most of the American ones found today are made of paper, this is a more unusual one. The outside case is either silverplate or possibly pewter. The back is solid and the front is open cut with scrolls and leaves and a leaping buffalo in the center (buffalo was lightly cleaned with silver polish and it shined up quite nicely - it is believed to be silver). On the top is a filigree piece on which the whole system is attached with a brass pin so that it swivels and allows you to open it up like a fan to reveal the celluloid pages for recording the dance information. There are total of six celluloid pages. It is interesting how edges of the celluloid pages and the back are cut to match the curved design of the front. There is a loop at the top of the swivel cap which would have allowed the lady to attach it to a chain or ribbon so she could wear it around her waist or wrist. There are no makers marks, but believed to have been possibly made by The Meridian Silver Co, in Connecticut around the turn of the century. Good+++ condition, no damage to metal casing, two of the celluloid pages have a small piece of one of the edge curves missing. The celluloid pages look as though they were never used. This piece measures 2 3/4 inches long x 1 3/4 inches wide. A beautiful dance card for your collection, a lovely item to display on your vanity!
