Silverplate American Victorian epergne calling card receiver as produced by Reed & Barton of Taunton, Massachusetts and dated Feb.1, 1880 by the presentation inscription on the flute holder. Card receivers were popular items during the Victorian era before telephones and mass communications. Every upwardly mobile household was likely to have at least one in the foyer to receive the numerous cards personally delivered daily by friends and others wishing to be in touch. T was a whole ritualized method of delivering calling cards that sent a particular message to the intended by folding certain corners to express sympathy, "sorry I missed you", etc. This particular card receiver has a charming nautical theme with figural anchors at the end of twisted ropes looped around pulleys at the silver flute holder. The anchors seem to hold up two sides of the card receiver basin and the other two raised sides are embellished with fruit clusters topped by ribbons. The glass flute is clear to green at the top opening of the vase and the actual color is best identified against white as shown in one picture. The pedestal base has hand-chased flowers and leaves around the circumference and a contrasting "Butler" finish (matte) is on the silver surface of the slender stem beneath the card tray. Condition is outstanding with only slight loss of silverplate, no denting and no missing parts or pieces. The glass epergne vase is likewise in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or flea bites. Silverplate surface of the card receiver is all original as far as I can tell, and shows only slight amount of base metal on the lower side of the card basin. The inside surface of the card holder has a few surface scratches and a few dots of pitting from use, but nothing that detracts from the exquisite beauty of this piece. The card receiver is in no need of restoration at this time. Dimensions are as follows: Overall Height 18-1/2" (To the Top of the Epergne Flute); Diameter of Card Receiver 8"; Height of Card Receiver Basin 7"; Base Diameter 6" (Leg to Leg); Glass Epergne Flute 4-1/4" Opening Diameter X 10" Length.
