Large and finest quality American Victorian epergne flute glass vase with silverplate holder as produced by the Meriden Britannia Co. of Meriden, Connecticut during the late 1860's. An identical version with the exact same base and scalloped top cut of the flute is shown in the color section of Dorothy Rainwater's book, American Silverplate. The only difference between the vase up for auction and the one in the book is the color of the glass and the design of the enameled surface. Otherwise the vases are identical in every way. The vase in the book is definitively dated 1868; I prefer to just say late 1860's. The early Meriden mark on the base is consistent with that particular era. The silverplate base is lightly washed with gold. The heavy, thick jade green glass flute is enameled with a heavy, yet delicately applied, enameled gold decoration which is somewhat reflective of the scrollwork of the silverplate base as seen in the pictures. T is almost no wear apparent to the gold enamel on the vase, particularly remarkable at the top of the scalloped rim which normally would show significant wear after almost 140 years! Yes, the flute is original to the base, so kindly do not ask that question; the flute and base are a snug fit, and it would be exceedingly difficult to find a substitute flute with a suitably thick bottom to make a marriage with this base. The picture in the book is testimony of the original flute design which this matches identically. Both the glass flute and base are in outstanding condition with no chips, cracks, or flea bites, and the silverplate surface with gold wash on the base is completely intact. This is a remarkable piece for a serious collector. Dimensions are as follows: Glass Flute 5-1/2" (Top Opening Diameter) X 11-1/4" High X 7/8" Diameter Bottom; Silverplate Holder 4-1/8" Diameter Bottom X 6" High X 1-1/8" Opening Diameter; Overall Height 15-3/8" (Flute & Base Together). PLEASE NOTE: I have made every effort to describe this item accurately and honestly. This item is well over 100 years old and may possess certain characteristics that come with being that age. If you have questions regarding the item please contact me in advance of bidding because I do not ship out items on approval, nor do I accept returns. ALL SALES FINAL! I will not be responsible for a buyer's dissatisfaction or disappointment once the item is received. While this item appears almost new, it is not glitzty department store merchandise, so if that is what you are expecting, this piece is probably not a good choice for you. I am a collector, not a dealer, and do not sell merchandise for a living. I am merely thinning out an over ambitious collection assembled over many years. The successful bidder must contact me within 3 calendar days of the auction closing to provide payment, shipping and address information. Payment must be received within 7 calendar days. If the seller fails to comply with these payment requirements I reserve the right to relist and sell the item to others without further notice. I will leave negative feedback for deadbeat buyers.
