T were few places in the old world Europe w garnets were mined. The most renowned since 1172 AD was the land (at that time) known as Bohemian and Greater Northern Moravian ... or simply, the Czech lands. The area which compromised a size that would fit into 1/3 of the state of Texas, was rich in iron, precious metals and rare gems ranging from moonstone to emerald. The land was situated directly in the center of Europe and only a small portion of it actually held the precious mines in which men slipped down hemp and leather braided ropes to caves far beneath the light of day. They navigated by a wick dipped in oil and surrounded by a thin glass chimney. Leather aprons attached to suspended leather straps protected their decent against the hardened walls as well as their chests from the mildew, microbes and mold. Handkerchiefs attached to their necks ...white when descending the pits in the morning were black with soot when ascending at early evening. Their work was low paid, their fate disastrous and their worth more than time or money could buy. For the nobility from the coasts of Portugal to the coast of the Ottoman Empire and all points between, depended upon their finds to grace their scepters, their shields, their crowns and certainly to fill the bracelets, the rings and necklaces of their ladies. By the early 1700's the finds were thinning and by the late 1800's had all but ceased. The most abundant gemstone was that of the GARNET. Although it has been replicated in synthetic form the world over, t is one undeniable trait of the true Bohemian Garnet ~ that being the rich dark crimson hue which with light refraction can even appear as black in colour. The set presented in are of old rote cut Bohemian garnets of the late 1800's. The garnets of the necklace are each linked with their old black enamel chain segments and segments every 1.5" and consist of rote faceted garnet beads of 5mm and 8mm. Front section of necklace is set apart via its spiral connecting segment from which the two 1.5" strands descend and ring loop the precious last segment of one 4mm and two 2mm garnets which border the exquisitely old rote cut rock crystal. Full length of necklace measures 22" and its closure is secured with its unique pewter smooth barrel push-in clasp. Each bead varies slightly in shape, cut, and colour hue ranging from the deep wine shade to the fire orange. Their hue is rare and each one possesses its unique character. Earrings are exquisitely delicate and alluringly accent the facial contours with their two fine tiered black enamel chain strands ending in softly faceted 8mm garnet beads. One smaller 4mm rote cut garnet attaches to bottom segment of the black wire loop. The toss of the head and the skip of the step each illuminate the brilliance of these Bohemian beauties! The full length measure of earrings from top of center top arch of wire to bottom of longer dangling segment is 3". (Strands measure 2.5" and 1.5" in lengths) The design, form and composition of this set is simple, elegant and exceptionally versatile enough to withstand the ever changing fashion trends that sweep the world's fashion market. But t's one change it will never negotiate ~ its birthplace.(I'm a tad attached to Bohemian garnets ... guess it's in my blood ... as my great grandfather had been one of those miners who slipped down the leather braided ropes to mine ~ in a place known as Kutna Hora of the Czech lands).
