Antique GEORGIAN/Victorian 9K Gold Exquisite Lace Pin with Carnelian Agate c. 1820 A very unique Georgian-era lace pin/brooch, with a lovely orange **Carnelian cabochon. Likely a mourning piece, it is surrounded by an ornate ruffled hand-chiseled 9K (acid/tested) gold mount. The back of the piece is likely pinchbeck or another gold alloy. Mourning pins of this type were worn during Victorian/Georgian times of mourning/remembrance. It retains what appears to be, its original antique c-catch, tube hinge and extended pin stem; all in excellent condition. Also has a safety chain/pin for added security, when worn. This chain could be removed to allow the piece to be worn as a pendant. It measures 1" long x .75" wide. **Carnelian (also sometimes referred to as cornelian) is a variety of chalcedony. The most favorable pieces are a deep red to red-orange hue. Carnelian has a long and storied past, and was once considered strictly the property of the noble class. People holding a high social status were often buried with this gem stone. Mourning jewelry mirrored the lives and times of the people who wore it. It was a souvenir to remember a loved one, a reminder to the living of the inevitability of death, and a status symbol, especially during the Victorian era.
