Early Victorian or late Georgian
'masterpiece' cameo of the Annunciation Angel, or Angel Gabriel carved shell no doubt by a master carver The carving is superb and the feeling that this angel is just as light as air, is a result of the skill involved transparent in areas, it gives a spiritual sensation, and the only item that Angel Gabriel is in a worldly setting is the lily that he holds. This lily is symbolic of the purity of the Virgin Mary & he is announcing to her, that she will be the mother of God. The annunciation is celebrated on March 25. As often seen in paintings, Angel Gabriel has his arms folded the cross formation. His face is lifted up to heaven Often Angel Gabriel look very feminine and is confused as being a female. In this rendition however, he has a masculine appearance although his garment could still cause some to insist that this is a female angel Natural inclusion of shell, which is not visible from the front, only when held up to the light, 2 1/2" x 2 1/8" size of actual shell is 2" x 1 1/2" clasp and hinge are in good working order and setting is gold wash over brass I have a number of lovely Victorian/Georgian/Edwardian cameos that I will be listing this week shipping for 2nd and 3rd items is free when it goes out with the first I have had over 10 years of 100% positive feedback and am planning to get back to that asap Therefore I will ship to Canada and U.
