Victorian Gold & Ruby-Red Garnet Stone Very Ornate Lady's Pin Brooch,Good Condition. This is a large Dark Ruby Red Garnet Stone inset in a Pinchbeck Gold very ornate lady's Pin Brooch,it was my late Grandmothers and was given to her by my Late Grandfather in I think the 1890-1900s as a present,I found it wrapped up in tissue paper in her Jewellery box that was passed down to me from my late Mother, they were very well off and my Grandfather only bought her the best so it must have been expensive at the time. I have been told by a dealer that she thinks it is made of a Gold Metal Called Pinchbeck(see below) with she thinks a large dark red Garnet, but is not positive of its age etc as it has no Hall or Makers-Marks etc on it. It is 2 inches oval at its widest and is 27 grams and in a good complete condition for its age with the clasp etc in good working order Pinchbeck is named after its inventor Christopher Pinchbeck who was a London clock maker and is thought to have lived about 1670 to 1732 . He invented this material which looks like gold in the 1720s not long into the Georgian era. It is a metal alloy which consists of Copper, Zinc and Brass and may also have a light wash of real gold over the top. Pinchbeck has the advantage of retaining its bright gold colour and not fading like many of the other gold substitutes available read more
