A Rare Late Victorian Icing or Iced Lemonade Jug with Heavily Frosted Exterior, Wrythen Strap Handle with Aplied Prunt and with Ice Well to the Rear. British, 1880s This is a rare and unusual icing jug used for white wine or lemonade. Dating to circa 1880, this has a heavily frosted exterior, increasing the effective surface area for maintaining cooling, a fine wrythen strap handle with a prunted lower terminal and the unusual feature of the ice well under the handle. This feature kept the ice, which may well have been procured from the ice-house and be from frozen lake or stream water, from the drink in the jug, thus preventing contamination whilst ensuring the desired chilling effect. The base has a snapped pontil scar.(as made- where the glass was removed from the pontil rod) The jug is of large size measuring approx 11.4 inches tall to the highest point. It comfortably holds 2.5 Pints of liquid. ( wt approx 1.76 kg ) It is in good used condition without damage or restoration. T his is an attic find and whilst we have washed it, i t would benefit from a thorough cleaning if it were to be used- Please study the close up pictures below for full details. Shipping within the UK is 10 GBP. The buyer pays full shipping costs. Payment by Bank Transfer, Visa/Mastercard, UK personal cheque in Pounds Sterling. Shipping subject to clearance.
