VICTORIAN BRITISH FIELD GRADE INFANTRY OFFICER'S 1822 PATTERN SWORD This is the 1845 pattern field grade officer'ssword, with gilt mounts, brass scabbard. The royal cypher of Victoria incorporated into the guard. The hilt retains nearly 75% orignial gilt. Blade : length is 32 ", single broad fuller, etched with floral and Royal Crown and VR on left sife of blade, the other has the Proof mark, family crest of the officer who's initials are FWP . florals and the same crown and VR. The blade overall is fine+ with the frosty etching at about 65% , faint blemishing not worth mentioning, one chip in the blade toward the point. The Crest has a clamshell in a wreath, over a pillow, and the motto, " SPE FOSTERI TEMPORIS ." The grip is sharkskin, all intact as is the wire. The brass scabbard was never gilted. T are a few small dings and scratches, but overall fine. Regulations of 1832 ordered field officers of regiments to use a brass scabbard. The hilt is lined with leather, showing it's age, with cracks, some outer areas chipped away and the leather tab under the pommel cap has separated. T is some hand chasing to the pommel cap. A sword knot is still in place, the bullion is toned and shows it's age. I would think with the combination of initials, period of use, Infantry and rank, this officer can be identified by those who have the access to the research materials. A great looking sword.
