Description bm002 Offered for auction is an antique Victorian John Jelliff Renaissance Revival Ladies Chair. Overall in very good condition, just needing some re-upholstering The framework is all 100% original with the original finish and is very sturdy. This piece was a gift from a neighbor who was dispensing of her great aunt's estate and it was last reupholstered by a professional with raw silk. It is now time for it to be done again. As to be expected with a piece of this age in this condition, there are also some slight dings and chips to the varnish that might need touch-ups as well. It is made of walnut with guilt (gold foil) detailing. The springs for the seats are all original, as is the horsehair stuffing, with new cotton batting added to refresh it during reupholstery (in 1998). It measures 35.75" high at the back, 26" at the widest point, about 27" deep and has a seat height of about 15.5". The carved Jenny Lind heads at arms and center of back crest are what really set this apart from its contemporaries, as well as the wider seat to accommodate the bustles of the period.Due to the size and weight it is available for pickup only in West New York, NJ. About John Jelliff John Jelliff of Newark, New Jersey was one of the more popular craftsmen of Renaissance Revival furniture. His parlor sets featured carved heads on the arms and crest, with Sevres painted plaques sometimes in the crests. Many gargantuan pieces of this style were produced with some sideboards or beds exceeding 14' in height. The Renaissance Revival period reached its zenith at the Philadelphia Centennial of 1876 where many of the foremost furniture makers of the period exhibited their proudest accomplishments. The Newark Museum and Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC contain many examples of Jelliff furniture.About The Era Renaissance Revival (1860-1880): The style was mostly produced out of walnut but mahogany, chestnut, and rosewood were also frequently used. Attributes of the Renaissance style are turned and fluted legs, raised or inset burled panels, heavily carved finials and crests, inset marble tops, and cookie cut corners. Many pieces are further decorated by black and gold incising, marquetry inlay, and bronze or brass mounts.
