The painting depicts numerous sailing boats at sea off the coast with seagulls flying overhead. This picture has all the elements of a fine marine painting and fully demonstrates why Thomas Bush Hardy is now regarded as one of the greatest Victorian marine watercolourists. The painting is signed and dated lower left. An exquisite watercolour that would grace any home or collection.Thomas Bush Hardy's work is highly collectible realising thousands of pounds at auction. Condition The painting is in fine condition, the colours are strong and well preserved, there is some light touching in to the sky, there is some very light rubbing to the paper lower right. The painting is presented behind glass in a wood and gilt composite frame which is in good condition with minor losses. Artist Information Thomas Bush Hardy was born in Sheffield in 1842, he was a marine painter and watercolourist. He travelled in Holland and Italy and exhibited widely at the leading Victorian institutions including the Royal Academy. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1884. Hardy’s prolific coastal scenes painted in fresh and vivid colours, achieved enormous popularity, even in his own lifetime. He garnered a greater attention with his watercolours and as a result, these works are more widely collected and are considered by many to be the finer. Today Hardy's work is highly sought after, he is represented with four watercolours in the British Government Art Collection. Prints of Hardy's work are sold widely and there are several galleries that can be found online with originals that are typically many thousands or tens of thousands of pounds.
