Thanks for taking a look. Up for aution is an pair of exquisite early Victorian mother of pearl and gilt opera glasses retailed by F G Smith Sons & Company of Detroit, Michigan. The gilt is in very good shape, the only wear you can see is on the slides w the lenses w toggled back and forth for focusing (the 4th and 5th picture). All of the Mother of Pearl is intact and in perfect condition. Take a look at one of the close ups (pictures 6) and you can see the rainbow of color the mother of pearl is reflecting. It is even more beautiful in person. All of the optical lenses are in perfect shape. All in all these things have been extremely well cared for and barely looked used. While it is very common to see opera glasses retailed with Parisian store's names around the eye pieces it very rare to see them from American jewelers. I have only ever seen one other pair and those are in my family from a jeweler in Augusta, Ga from the late 1860's. These are a great piece of historic memorabilia for anyone interested in Detroit or Michigan history. I have not been able to find out much about F G Smith Sons and Company but I found that they supplied a clock to Detroit City Hall in 1895 and in 1889 they made generous donations to help Michigan Veterans of The Civil War make it to Gettysburg. Please see below. Michigan Day at GettysburgSurvivors of the 24th Michigan -- Michigan Day at Gettysburg, June 12, 1889 The legislature appropriated $8,000 for the dedication, $5,000 of which was to be devoted to the transportation of the Michigan survivors of the battle. The share of the Twenty-fourth Michigan was inadequate, and as it was Detroit's regiment whose enlistment redeemed the good name of the city in its darkest hour, it was resolved to ask the citizens to aid its regiment to revisit the field on which they had won an honored name for themselves and their city. The responses were generous and, with the sum received from the appropriation, sufficient to furnish free transportation to all the survivors of the regiment who fought t The following contributed the fund: Hon.
