Take a trip through the Bazaar and see if any of our one of a kind items have found their new one of a kind owners :) This listing is for a Beautiful Victorian Mourning / Memento Mori Jewellery Whitby Jet Expanding Bracelet With central Cross Medallion I love mourning jewellery. I love the artisitry of it, the hidden meanings, and the detailed ritual that Victorian society evolved for every aspect of death, burial and mourning. During the period of mourning women were expected to wear clothing made of black and only wear jewellery made of black Whitby Jet. However, jet is a relatively rare, and takes time and experience to carve, making the jewellery if created an expensive luxury. Jet is also fragile and will crack, chip and split if not well cared for, making it a much sought after collectable. Jet was also expensive to buy during the Victorian era, and many products that mimicked jet were invented. Bog oak, preserved wood stained dark by years of submersion in a peat bog, was used, as was pressed horn and ebonite aka vulcanite (a type of hard moulded rubber.) An inexperienced collector can often find they have purchased a Jet mimick rather than the real thing! This beautiful bracelet has been tested and is GENUINE Whitby Jet. It was probably created between 1860 and 1880 - with an early date being more likely due to the design. Each section has been carved from jet, in a gentle curved form, so, that when they are strung together, they form a perfect circle. The central medalion is a much larger peice with a scalloped edge and a hand carved cross motive. The sections at the front and larger and thicker than those at the back. It is a smaller peice, and was obviously made to fit a ladies wrist. It measures 6cms across and about 16cms around (internal measurement) It has been refitted with modern elasticated thread so it is ready to wear, and easily expands over the wrist. CONDITION It is generally in pretty good condition (especially given its age) but it does have a number of nubbled edges and corners. None of the parts are cracked of split, and it still has that wonderfully deep glossy shine of well cared for jet.
