An exquisite piece of Victoriana dating from circa 1875. The condition is superb and far the best that I have ever seen. Only the Victorian's can convert a mundane item of hall furniture into such a decorative item. It is so totally fuctional either in your hallway or on the bedroom wall to display your scarves, nightwear and necklaces. So chic... The main framework constructed of Black, highly lacquered papier mache. This is inlaid with carved mother of pearl flowers and foliage. Around the entire edge is a tiny and intricate border of white metal inlay. The turned and painted wooden opening balustered brackets have a domed top to hold hats, with ivory finials to the bottom. T are two ebonized wooden pegs along the bottom and five along the top, each finished with a white porcelain centre. The piece de resistence is the central panel. A wool work tapestry of an eastern lady highlighted with coloured glass beadwork. Measuring 23" wide, fully opened and 15.25" wide when closed. 13" high and 0.5" deep. Complete with original hanging hooks. Condition is absolutely superb, sorry to repeat but this is the best example that I have ever seen. The lacquer is in remarkably good condition and has hardly ever been used. No particular Knocks or scratches.
