Circa 1890's mother of pearl shell encased compass, thermometer combination Circa late 1800's French compass and thermometer combination. This instrument is housed in an oval, mother of pearl case with a brass edge. Upon opening the shell the compass sits on the left side. The cardinal points are marked in French. (N-E-S-O) Glass crystal, flat half blue, half steel compass needle. The inside of the brass case surrounding the compass has a floral design on it. On the right side is the thermometer. (Marked "Thermométer" The thermometer tube has two scales next to it. One reads "rt" that goes to 120. The other reads "reau" that goes to 40. The mother of pearl case and compass are in excellent condition. This is a very rare instrument. This instrument was sold to Victorian era ladies to be worn on a necklace. (Case has a suspension ring at the top for the necklace.) The compass points to North and thermometer works well too. Diameter is 27 mm (From top to bottom).
