Being offered is a rare and beautiful piece of Victorian
Art Glass. It is a ruby die away Satin Mother Of Pearl/ Air Trap Art Glass Vase. The ruby color is a deep raspberry at the top and gradually changes to a light pink color near the bottom. The MOP/ Air Trap decoration is a beautiful and rare Moire Optic Art Nouveau type pattern. This pattern was found on pieces made by both Phoenix and Webb. The outer surface is acid finished silky satin glass. The inside layer is opal or white. The top rim is ground and finished and the bottom is recessed and smooth. The different layers of glass are fully evident in the edge of the top ground rim. I believe this vase was made by the Phoenix Art Glass Company in the USA or possibly, by Webb in the Stourbridge Region of England. It was made circa 1885. Pictures of a jug/pitcher of this exact type and color can be found in the book: Phoenix Art Glass by Leland Maple on page 77 Center. The coloring and MOP pattern are basically identical. A very similar Vase shape and color with a different MOP design may be found in the book: Victorian Decorative Glass by Mervyn Gulliver on page 155 top center. Regardless of the attribution it is a beauty. It also has good size being just over 8 1/4 inches tall, just under 2 5/8 inches across the open top, approximately 4 1/2 inches across at the shoulder (its widest point), and 2 1/2 inches across the round bottom. This vase is in excellent condition with one caveat. T is a manufacturing flaw. It is an internal bubble or "bruise" (see photo) in the lower side of the body. It is between the two layers and because of its low down location is not easily noticeable when normally displayed. Other than this flaw t are no chips, cracks, or repairs. etc.). T is the usual light wear on the bottom edge w it rests. Any white or light spots you see in the photos are flash reflections. A fine decorative piece that should appeal to MOP/ Air Trap, Victorian Art Glass, Phoenix Art Glass/ Webb Glass, and Satin Glass lovers. Buyer pays shipping.
