This auction presents a really lovely Victorian pickle castor. It has an especially pretty silverplated frame decorated with a band of embossed birds and flowers in the aesthetic style. The hinged handle is topped with an applied leave motif and the frame stands on four curved legs with paw feet. The original lid has a peaked finial. I do not have the tongs. The maker is Middletown Plate Company of Middletown, Connecticut. The clear glass insert is cut and etched with a delightful design of Morning Glory vines and berries on alternating panels. It has a round shape that looks a lot like a rose bowl and a polished base. The glass is very clear with no haze. The overall height of the castor is 10 1/2" to the top of the handle and it measures 4 5/8" across at the center. The insert is 4 1/8" high and about 4 1/4" across at the widest point. The bottom of the frame has the maker's hallmark, "Triple Plate" and is numbered "63". This piece is in very good+ estate condition. The frame has no apparent damage or repairs and the only plate loss I find is on the lid's finial (see photo). The glass insert has no chips, cracks or repairs. T are a few nicks on the raised ribs which appear to have resulted from taking the glass in and out of the frame and another tiny one on the inside edge of the rim. These flaws are not at all noticeable or distracting. read more
