T are many collectors of Unger Brothers pieces and
no wonder given the intensity, quality and beauty of their designs. Many compared Unger to Tiffany. William Unger, one of 5 brothers, was a partner of Thomas Edison from 1870 to 1872. When they ended their company, William joined his 4 brothers and formed Unger Brothers. Originally they made pen knives and hardware items. By 1878 they had expanded into jewelry and their pieces were frequently inspired by Alphonse Mucha, the artist who epitomized the art nouveau movement. This sterling silver hallmarked buckle with their trademark "U" over "B", is typical of their work. It embodies a very rich, deep repousse. The flowing haired maiden is set in an almost baroque atmosp with its swirls, but the art nouveau of the period pervades with the abundance of floral. This is a treasure! For the past 25 years, I have been a designer of one of a kind wearable art. My trademark was to integrate antique and vintage textiles with luxurious new fabrics. I frequently traveled to Europe in my quest for the most beautiful embroideries, appliques and trims. My art coats, jackets and gowns graced many red carpet award shows, weddings, charity balls and the like. Using brilliantly deft sewers our creations sold for as much as $10,000. I have now semi retired but I still have 1000s of design elements. I have a vast collection of appliques, motifs, laces, buttons, buckles, silk ribbon work rosettes, fabric yardage,beads and baubles. I hope to sell them on to another creative soul who might have a vision for them. I am also amidst an abundance of clutter, my personal collection of Victoriana and kitch, which also needs to be downsized. This could take years! I hope you will visit me often as I will attempt to add things daily.
