Victorian Rosewood Lap Desk In generally good condition for a piece of this age, the desk has a quiet dignity which manages to make it distinguished without shouting about it. The rosewood has suffered a slight scratch to the top, but is otherwise of a good colour and has the benefit of being framed, along its top and front, with what looks to be pewter stringing. Measuring approximately 15" x 10" x 5½" makes it a useful size without being too large to be manageable. The only decoration to the exterior is mother of pearl, used in the cartouche, with engraved initials, and the matching escutcheon. This allows the nice, consistent grain and patina to speak for themselves. The working lock and its key look to be original, as do the hinges. Opening the lid, one immediately notices the tooled leather, which appears to have been in place for a long time and has, as is so often the case, suffered a crack across the fold. As a mark of quality, the lids of the compartments have been provided with hinge wells so that they will lie flat when open. Both compartments are well finished and the lower one has strings in the lid to hold small notes. Inside the lid for the upper compartment is the label for "Pearce - maker. 77 Cornhill, London." T is an ebonised pencil tray and two small lidded compartments with non-matching mother of pearl knobs. Inside one of the compartments is a bottle containing powder for making red ink, purchased for the sum of two shillings. T are two inkwells, one with a brass screw top and the other with a glass top. In the front are seven divisions for storage. An item of quiet quality. Postage and packing will be $25 to UK and $65 to USA.
