This is for a beautiful and absolutely pristine boxed Victorian pocket Spectroscope by John Browning. This model is the deluxe with the extra barrel on top that puts a scale by the side of the spectrum when viewed. The optics in this scope are amazing, clear and functional. The instrument measures 88mm when closed. The instrument has a telescopic feature within the housing and it functions perfectly. The craftsmanship of this unit is of the highest order as John Browning was a prolific scientific instrument maker specializing in optical instruments and his work was of the very best known. He was born in Kent, the son of William Browning (d 1862) and his wife Susan. William Browning conducted an instrument-making business at 111 Minories, London, which his son later claimed had been established as early as 1765. It has long been suggested that this was the shop Charles Dickens had in mind in describing that of Solomon Gills in Dombey and Son. The instrument is clearly marked on the side with the makers name and address at 63 The Strand London, which he acquired in 1872. This spectroscope will date not long after that date. You will be hard pressed to ever find such as well preserved Victorian Instrument.
