Victorian Silver Revolving Tureen c1860-1880
History & Context The Revolving Tureen represented one article that enjoyed far more popularity in plate than in solid silver. It's extreme weight in solid silver made it costly and impractical to use for convenient serving. Furthermore, when hot foods were placed in solid silver tureens, the silver quickly absorbed the heat and hence, made it extremely difficult for Servants to handle. we see for the first time the preference for Victorian plate over solid silver for practical reasons rather than for purposes of economy. Revolving Victorian silver tureens and entree dishes enjoyed a long span of production that started about 1780 and, even at present, are among the leading articles found in formal breakfast, lunch & dinner settings. Item Description This circular modeled English Victorian Silver Revolving Tureen floats gracefully on 4 sweeping, tapering feet; portraying a perfectly proportioned, wonderful, oval, period design The elegant round, protruding Ivory ball-handle is original The well-balanced revolving lid gently locks when placed in the closed position The Finest English revolving tureens (like this example) embellished with chasing, engravings and fine detail work are more sought-after than their more common, plain counterparts Revolving tureens with hot water reservoirs, drip plates and circular body design (for proper air circulation) kept the food warm as period kitchens were far removed from the dining areas of wealthy households All parts are original, present and in proper working order -- reflecting proper care and storage This lovely tureen stands 9 inches tall, measures 14 3/4 inches across the oval (handle to handle) and measures 9 1/4 inches front to back (all measurements are approximate) Very sturdy, heavy gauge plate with fine detail work English Hallmarks (please see pictures) A well developed, silky, time-enhanced, undisturbed, soft, buttery-smooth patina; a surface condition assumed from proper, gentle hand-polishing over the previous 130+ years Diminutive revolving bacon or side-dish tureens are considered more difficult to find & acquire in comparison to the larger revolving entree tureens No monograms, removals or repairs; near mint condition with light tarnish A highly desirable acquisition for advanced collectorsQuality lives when price is forgotton.
