Lovely 12-piece Victorian dessert service for six. The set includes both dessert forks and matching knives. All the pieces have wonderful mother of pearl handles carved to resemble coral. Sterling ferules with acanthus leaf decoration lead to the silverplate blades and tines, ornately engraved in a floral pattern. Many 19th century sterling silver services included only a limited number of pieces, and additional sets with mother of pearl handles were often used for dessert. These services were often used to serve the fish course, as well. The set remains in its original solid oak fitted box lined with royal purple silk and velvet. The top of the box has an inlaid brass escutcheon that can be engraved. Each piece is marked with the makerÃ,Â's mark Ã,Â"WH&SÃ,Â".
Origin: probably English, circa 1890. Condition: excellent, a tiny bit of wear to the plating on the tips of some of the fork tines. Size: forks, 7-3/16Ã,Â" long; knives, 8-1/2Ã,Â" long.
