A Victorian Tantalus Containing 3 Original Hobnail Cut Glass Decanters Attractive Old English Oak Shaped Sides Brass Decorative Mounts 1880's Style Brass Carrying Handle Secure Working Lock and Key This is a superb example of the Victorian Tantalus "Tantalus was the ancient Greek who stole the food of the Gods and served them his own son instead. For his punishment, Zeus , sent him to Hades for eternity and had him placed so that he could see water and fruit but when he reached for them, they were no longer within his grasp. Because he was already dead, he could not die again from hunger and thirst. Thus, we have a tantalizing experience. Tantalus, tfore, is a very apt name for this locked drinks container." In Victorian times, the servants were fond of a little tipple as they went about their work. The invention of the Tantalus put an end to the tippling of the Lord's liqueur. This Tantalus is in excellent condition. The Oak and the Brass are like new The lock works well The structure is firm and solid The 3 Hobnail Cut Decanters all have the Hobnail pattern. The bottoms of the Decanter stoppers were reground sometime in the past to eliminate chipping and to make them perfectly safe for use. The Base is 14 Inches by 51/2 Inches It is 13 Inches High It weighs 10.6 Pounds or just under 5 Kg Interestingly, the decanters all have the same dimensions except for weight. Their weights are as follows 1.15 KG .949 Kg .944 Kg This can be explained by the fact that they were hand made and the thickness of the glass varies from one to the other.
