This fabric and horsehair stuffing are all original to the piece, which sports classic fainting-couch styling, with a tall half-round back leading to a straight panel, all accented with carved and incised detailing - an excellent wave accent is noted toward one end of the back. The feet are castered, with elegant curled styling noted t, and additional accents abound at the arm. The real story , however, is the convertible aspect of the couch - the seat folds over to reveal a rather comfy (at least by Victorian standards) bed with double headrest and decent striped white fabric. Now that's unusual! We note the iron frame is marked "Altmann" - perhaps the maker of the entire piece, or perhaps the founder, not really sure about that ... The couch is in good condition with scattered losses in the upholstery, mostly in the portions which are hidden when the piece is folded up (stuffing is visible at the lower portion of the back when the bed is unfolded), as well as scattered wear to the framing and the requisite scuffs and dings found on most pieces of Victorian furniture. We must say this is nonetheless a most unique and wonderful find, structurally sound and quite pleasing to the eye; an upholsterer worth his or her salt should be able to remedy the aforementioned losses. The item measures 35 1/2" tall X 73" long X 24" wide, unfolded; add 20" to the width for the unfolded state. Weight is approximately 175-200 lbs.
