This impressive Victorian bracelet is quite fascinating as the center bead and tall, tapered beads are is unmistakably the product of Davenport & Cole (patent 1863). The beads they produced have the look of carved Whitby jet yet t is no evidence of this material having been named and all that exists is the 1863 patent by Davenport and Cole of the UK for a material made of gutta percha and papier mache. Interestingly these patented pieces are universally called Bois Durci which they are not. Research proves that Bois Durci was in fact quite fragile and no jewelry was made with it and virtually nothing made of it did survived. That this material, which remains virtually indiscernible from Whitby jet, was never named or mentioned in the huge scope of information about materials designed to copy Whitby jet is a continuing curiosity. This is the mystery of the D&Câe(tm)s product. Ultimately, when one buys Victorian jewelry it has to be for the love of the item and this one comes with quite a bit of history that can only grow with time. About the bracelet itself is in great shape. Its circumference is 8 inches and the center bead, which does not have the patent mark but is definitely D*C, measures 2 inches in height and 1 1/4 inches in width.
